Emily Bronte

Emily was raised by her father, and lived with her brother and two sisters. All three daughters enjoyed writing poetry and novels; Wuthering Heights would become Emily’s only published work. The novel was published in 1847, one year before her death, under the name “Ellis Bell”. Emily attended boarding school at the age of 6 (Clergy Daughters’ School at Cowan Bridge), from which she was removed after two of her sisters became ill and passed away in 1825. Emily remained at home for some time after that, reading extensively and only leaving for a few short months at school in 1835. Bronte held a teaching position at Law Hill School in 1837, lasting only seven months before retiring her career. She traveled briefly abroad to Brussels in 1842 but returned home for the remainder of her life. Emily Bronte passed away of Tuberculosis in December 1948.
